Visit to Weston Hall

Weston Hall lies down a quiet lane across the river from Burley-in-Wharfedale. The house has not been sold since it was acquired by Sir Robert Stopham in the 13th century, and is currently the home of Christopher Dawson, 32nd Squire of Weston. It is a mixture of architectural styles from the 15th to the 19th centuries, with correspondingly varied interiors and furnishings.

Located in the oldest part of the house, the 15th-century north tower contains a fine plaster ceiling of about 1500 installed by Mauger le Vavasour. The rest of the structure was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries – following a devastating fire – which accounts for its eclecticism. Weston Hall remains, however, a cherished family home, and our visit will be led by Mrs Mary Dawson.
