About the Event
Farnley Hall, near Otley, is a 17th century house extended and remodelled by John Carr in the 1780s. It is one of Carr’s most elegant small houses, restrained in elevation and plan, but beautifully refined in detail. Farnley’s Georgian interiors were meticulously restored in the late 20th century, and much of the carving was executed by Dick Reid’s craftsmen.
The house contains an important collection of Civil War relics, including Oliver Cromwell’s hat, Lord Fairfax’s sword, and a collection of fine Georgian furniture. It contains perhaps the best collection of paintings by J. M. W. Turner in private hands. Turner was a frequent guest at the house between 1808 and 1824, and the paintings are the legacy of his friendship with Farnley’s owner, Walter Fawkes. Our tour will be led by his descendant, Guy Fawkes. Tea and coffee is included.
